A new year always feels like a fresh start. A pause. A moment to reflect on what matters most and what we want to hold onto moving forward.
This year, one thing has been heavy on my heart-let's make this the year we finally take the family photos.
So many families tell me the same thing:
"I want to wait until I lose a little weight."
"I don't like how I look right now."
"Maybe next year..."
And I get it. We are so hard on ourselves. I'm a photographer and I still don't love being in front of the camera. I notice every little thing. The tired eyes. The extra pounds. The flaws no one else sees.
But here's the truth I have to remind myself of too- it's not about us.
It's about our KIDS.
Remember the Photo Albums?
Do you remember growing up up in the 80s and 90s? Pulling out those big, heavy photo albums with the plastic pages that stuck together?
We'd flip through pages of:
*Christmas mornings in mismatched pajamas
*Birthday cakes with too many candles
*Family vacations
*First days of school
*Random everyday moments that didn't feel special at the time
No one cared how mom's hair looked. No one cared if dad had a few extra pounds. We just loved seeing our family. Those photos told our story.
And even though today our photos may live on phones, hard drives, or online galleries instead of thick albums on the coffee table-the meaning hasn't changed.
It's Not About Perfection
Your kids won't look back one day and think:
"Mom should've waited until she felt more confident."
They'll think:
"That's my mom."
"That's our family."
"Those were our days together."
They want to see you. Just as you are. In this season of life. Because this season matters.
A Promise for the New Year
So maybe this year, instead of resolutions that fade by February, we make a simple promise:
Let's just take the pictures
Not when life feels perfect. Not when everything lines up. But now. In the messy, beautiful, real moments.
Because years from now, these photos will mean everything.
And I promise- you'll never regret being in them.
